Instagram – The Industry, Growing a Following, Insta friends

May 30, 2018

I can already feel myself flinching.

I haven’t been very active on Instagram until recently. I would post photos and often blogpost related photos but it was mostly promotion. After a great discussion with a colleague I realized that in order to grow and achieve my goals, I needed to get out of my comfort zone. Meaning that yes, I was going to take my lady balls in my hands and take full photos of myself. Or rather have my sister plays the photographer – amazingly well. It was something I wanted to do for a long time but was too afraid to do it. I’m not very confident in my body and feel weird when I have my photo taken – well, I’m getting more used to it. I knew it was the next step to improve my blog and social media content, and grow my following.

It’s a fact, nowadays growing a following on Instagram is hard. There are so many accounts, the algorithm plays everyone, hashtags are strategic and the follow-unfollow game is peaking.

But Gaby was not here to play so I’ve decided to do my utmost. I’ve started to plan the look of my feed on UNUM, I’ve been having fun with editing apps, I brainstorm photoshoot ideas and captions and I have to say that I love it. I love being so creative and sharing a content I’m proud of.

I’ve also decided to post daily. It’s sometimes a bit hard but I’m a planner so I try to always have at least ten or so photos ahead. I’ve also realized that this is now taking a lot of my free time, like at least 7 to 10 hours a week. I’m not complaining though because I love it and taking great photos has sparked up my inspiration for blogpost ideas.

Getting more and more into the Instagram game has made me realize that this Industry is way larger that I imagined. I was inspired to improve my social media game by Sophie Milner and Millie Cotton thanks to their amazing podcast Keeping it Candid where they often talk about their businesses. I’ve realized listening to them and even more by upping up my game how much work and thought goes into an Instagram account. Some people say that social media is easy and not a job but when you see a beautiful feed, no matter how many followers it has, how can you think it’s easy? And to people who say that – try it, you’ll see. As Fleur de Force would say, it’s often a situation of “it’s not hard work but I work hard”.

To be honest, my re-found love for Instagram came back after I did a good old spring clean of the accounts I was following. I know only follow accounts that inspire me and make me happy. I wanted Instagram to become a happy place again for me, and not an app that made me compare and hate myself whenever I would scroll my feed. Now, I feel pride and joy watching and liking amazing content by amazing people who are doing an awesome job. It’s so nice when you see a fellow blogger or Instagrammer is working with a brand, I always feel so happy for them.

It’s as if they are my friends and that’s what friends do, they lift each other up and celebrate successes.

It’s easier to put the competition on the side and walk arm in arm.

What do you think?

  3. Instagram is definitely hard work! I also have to plan out my photos for the week! I want to get full body pictures up on my account but finding someone to take pics of me has been difficult especially since I am awkward with taking pics. I am glad you shared this with us!
